hey skullcap,i use beeswax and do it three times.and then every few months.i use a corn cob stopper and also coat with beeswax.when you cut top off gourd pour a handful of pea gravel in to the gourd and shake and dump a few times as this takes the dry membrane out.

Lew,
I like that canteen. I have a large gourd I was going to use for a canteen. How did you seal it with the beeswax?

scott,i melted some beeswax candles down and poured it into the gourd and swished it around with the corncob stopper in the top,did this till it it solidified, and repeated this process a few times.you have to be quick, real quick.the corncob stopper i dipped into the wax just on the part that enters the gourd.it has seen alot of trail time with me and is very durable.and no bad taste to the liquids it carries.every once in a while i re-coat the inside with beeswax.

my next gourd canteen i am going to put in between two boards and try to make a flat one.i have seen a picture of the setup they use.2 boards with turn screws through them and you keep cranking them down and it depressses the gourd until you are satisfied with how flst you want it...
